The nickel laterite ore is mixed with a reducing agent (e.g., coal dust or coke) and entered into a rotary kiln, which slowly moves toward the discharge end under the action of kiln rotation (1-3 rpm) and tilting (2-4°). The temperature inside the kiln is controlled at 800-1200°C, so that the nickel oxides are reduced to nickel metal or nickel-iron alloy, while the crystallized water and volatile matter in the ore are removed. The roasted product is cooled and then entered into the subsequent magnetic separation or wet smelting process to realize the extraction of nickel. Rotary kilns are often equipped with waste heat recovery and flue gas treatment systems to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution.

The Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF) high-temperature smelting process for ferro-nickel is an emerging ferro-nickel smelting technology in recent years, which is capable of efficiently processing nickel laterite ore. The core process is as follows: firstly, the nickel laterite ore is dried, preheated and partially reduced by rotary kiln to remove the moisture and volatile matter, so that the nickel and iron oxides are initially reduced; then it enters the electric furnace for high-temperature smelting, and after slag-gold separation, it gets the high-grade ferro-nickel, which is finally used in the production of stainless steel, and then it is used in the production of stainless steel, which is used in the production of stainless steel.

Rotary kiln-electric furnace (RKEF) high-temperature smelting of ferro-nickel process has the advantages of low energy consumption, high recovery rate (nickel recovery rate>90%), adaptable to medium and high-grade ore, etc. It is the current benchmark technology of nickel laterite ore pyrometallurgical smelting, and it is especially widely used in resource-rich areas such as Indonesia.
